No, it doesn't hurt the machine. The SMS you are talking about to the carrier is a closed, secure connection to your cellular account. It cannot be used for standard SMS.
That might change in the future, but not right now.

They said that the Go (LTE) not support to send sms. I found this and can send sms to my carrier to check data plan. Does it harm my Surface?
