Windows 11 Installation: error Install Driver to Show Hardware

I bought a laptop Lenovo with an Intel Ultra 7 CPU, without any OS.

Then, I created a bootable USB pen (capacity 8Gb) in a Mac, formatting it to MSDOS(FAT) + MBR with Disk Utility, and then used the command-line command "sudo dd if=./windowsISO.iso of=/dev/diskX bs=1m"

The pen was then introduced in a USB port of the new laptop, and started to load. Minutes after the installation process open the window "Install drive to show hardware" (keys don't work, only TAB, arrows and ENTER or SPACE). In the "Browse" button, it allows to minimally navigate on the drive "Boot X:" and shows also the drive "USB C:" (why USB?) that is unformatted. The computer manufacturer said that the installation shouldn't rise this issue.

Note: when running "sudo fsck_msdos /dev/diskX", the observation "Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: 000000"...

Hello JDias,

The “Install driver to show hardware” error during Windows 11 installation typically happens because the installation media cannot detect the storage drives—often due to missing or incompatible drivers or issues with the bootable USB itself.

Here are some professional steps you can follow to resolve this issue:

•	Check your USB creation method: Writing a Windows ISO directly to a USB using tools or commands (like “dd” on Mac) sometimes results in bootable drives that aren’t fully compatible with Windows installation, especially on newer hardware. It’s generally safer to create the bootable USB using the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool or third-party tools such as Rufus on a Windows PC.

•	Try a different USB drive or port: Sometimes the USB stick or the specific USB port can be the culprit. Using another USB stick, preferably a new or good-quality one, and switching to a different port (USB 2.0 if you were on 3.0, or vice versa) often resolves the issue.

•	BIOS/UEFI settings: Verify that your BIOS or UEFI is set to UEFI mode (not Legacy), with settings such as AHCI instead of RAID, and that Secure Boot is enabled if required. On some laptops with Intel VMD or RAID configurations, you may need to disable VMD or set the controller to AHCI—which will make the drives visible to the Windows installer.

•	Manually supply storage drivers: If your motherboard uses technologies like Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) or VMD, you may need to download the relevant storage or chipset drivers from your manufacturer’s website, extract them to a separate USB drive, and use the “Load Driver” option during installation. Make sure the driver matches your hardware and Windows version.

Test with another ISO version: Sometimes, using a specific ISO version helps. Use the latest official Windows 11 release downloaded directly from Microsoft when possible.

•	If all else fails: As a workaround, some have installed Windows 10 first, then upgraded to Windows 11, if the Windows 11 installer won’t detect disks but Windows 10 will.

•	Troubleshoot for file system issues: If using a Mac, ensure the USB is correctly formatted. Issues like “Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block” suggest a problem with how the USB was created, which can prevent the Windows installer from recognizing it properly.

If you continue to encounter issues, it may be helpful to recreate the installation USB using a different computer or with a different software tool, and double-check your BIOS settings to ensure maximum compatibility for installing Windows 11.

Best Regards,

Jerald Felix

If you are unable to see the internal drive to install Windows onto, you need to go to the support page for your laptop on the Lenovo website.

From the chipset section, download the installer for the Intel RST drivers.

Extract out the drivers from that installer and put them into a new folder on your USB.

When you reach the part of the installation where you cannot see the drive, click 'Load Driver, then select one of those Intel RST drivers.
