Use these checks to stop the audio from muting/unmuting on a Surface running Windows:

    1. Confirm the correct output device
      • Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
      • Select the arrow next to the volume slider and make sure the intended speakers/headphones are selected as the output device.
    2. Check physical connections
      • If using wired headphones/speakers, reseat the plug firmly.
      • If there are multiple jacks, try another jack and verify it is the correct output.
      • If using USB audio, try a different USB port.
      • Unplug headphones entirely and see if the Surface speakers stay unmuted.
    3. Check Volume mixer and app levels
      • Right‑click the Speakers icon and select Open Volume mixer (Windows 10) or Open Volume mixer from Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer (Windows 11).
      • Make sure System and the affected app are not muted and their sliders are turned up.
    4. Verify the device is not disabled
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Select the output device, then Device properties (Windows 10) or More sound settings > Playback > Properties (Windows 11).
      • Ensure the device is enabled (Windows 11: Device usage = Use this device (enable); Windows 10: Disable check box is cleared).
    5. Turn off audio enhancements and test
      • In the same device Properties window, open the Enhancements tab (Windows 10) or Audio enhancements (Windows 11).
      • Disable all enhancements and test whether the random muting stops.
    6. Update or reinstall the audio driver
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right‑click the Surface audio device and select Update driver.
      • If the issue persists, uninstall the device and restart so Windows reinstalls the driver, or install the latest driver from the device manufacturer.

If the behavior continues after these steps, it is likely caused by hardware (jack or buttons) or a vendor‑specific driver issue, and support from Surface/ASUS/Realtek using their tools (such as OEM update apps) is recommended.
