i have a friend, we want to talk more than over email but they have an iphone, so i am trying to get them a link to a chat for the 2 of us on teams but i dont know how to go about doing so

Hello

Does your friend have a Microsoft account already? If so, in Teams, you can simply start a new chat and add your friend's Microsoft account to start chatting. Make sure your friend installs the Microsoft Teams app on their phone.

If your friend doesn't have a Microsoft account, you can still type their email address into the chat invite field, instead of adding them, it will show "Invite" for you to send a link to their email address, so they can sign up for a Microsoft account and install Teams to join you.

i dont know if they can see my invites tho

Only your friend can confirm that. No response from them doesn’t necessarily mean the invite wasn’t sent. Try reaching out directly and ask if they received an email from Microsoft Teams, and have them check their junk or spam folder as well. If they confirm they didn’t receive anything, then you can start troubleshooting, but it’s too early to assume there’s an issue just because you haven’t heard back yet.

Can you email your friend directly or call/text your friend to find out?

I am happy to help you troubleshoot further if your friend can confirm that they didn't receive the Teams invite.

We cannot simply troubleshoot based on assumption, because that would be a waste of everyone's time when there's a chance your friend just hasn't checked email yet and there has never been a problem to begin with.

So you did get a hold of her? Can you ask her if she has a Microsoft account, or will she give you her Microsoft account address?

You know, your friend doesn't need to rely on this invitation to join Teams or get a Microsoft account.

Have her go to https://account.live.com to create/sign up for an account. It is free.

Once she signs up, have her share her Microsoft account email address with you so you can add her. Or give her your Microsoft account email address and have her add you. Either way works. But she needs to be willing to do so.

To set up a 1:1 chat in Microsoft Teams and share it with a friend on iPhone, use one of these options:

Option 1 – Start the chat yourself, then they reply

Open Microsoft Teams (Free) on desktop or mobile.
Select New chat.
In the To: box, type your friend’s email address (the one they’ll use to sign in to Teams) and select it.
Type a message and select Send.
Tell your friend to install the Microsoft Teams app on their iPhone, sign in with that same email, and open Chat. They will see the 1:1 chat you started and can reply there.

Option 2 – Send a link directly to a chat message (after the chat exists) Once there is already a chat between the two of you:

In Teams, open the chat with your friend.
Hover over (or long‑press on mobile) any message in that chat.
Select More options > Copy link.
Paste that link into an email or message to your friend.

When your friend taps the link on their iPhone (and has Teams installed and is signed in with an account that’s part of that chat), Teams will open directly to that specific message in your 1:1 chat.

Note: The link only works for people who are already participants in that chat; it cannot be used to invite someone who is not yet in the chat.
