I downloaded the teams app on my macbook and it says my microsoft teams account is deactivated. How do I reactivate it?

To better understand your situation, could you please help clarify the following:

Are you using a work/school account managed by an organization, or a personal Microsoft account to sign in to Teams on your Mac?

Do you currently have an active Microsoft 365 subscription associated with this account?

Are you able to sign in to Teams via a web browser?

If so, does the issue persist when using Incognito/In Private browsing mode?

In the meantime, you can try clearing the Teams cache on your Mac to see if that resolves the issue:

If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon in the dock, and then select Quit or press Command (⌘)-Q.

In the Finder, open the /Applications/Utilities folder, and then double-click Terminal.

Enter the following commands, and press Return after each command:
rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2

Restart Teams.

Thank you for your suggestions Winnie. I went into the free teams and it had me there with my original email address. It did not promote me to create a new email. I did the same thing using the teams app. It looks like the only way I can join a meeting scheduled by someone else is to add the meeting link and password manually. I am not able to just click on the link sent to me by my client as I get the pop up saying deactivated account.

I was in the phone with Microsoft support for over 2 hours either waiting for support and speaking to someone. I was promised a dedicated engineer to help me with this problem and I never heard from them. I reported this to Microsoft and have not heard back from them either.

I am frustrated with this whole thing and will see if I can get my clients to use zoom going forward.

1, Check Keychain Access:

Open "Keychain Access" (found in Applications > Utilities).

In the search bar at the top right, type Microsoft.

Find any entries related to Microsoft Teams or com.microsoft.teams and delete them. (This will not delete your data, it just forces a clean sign-in).

2, Verify the App Version:

Ensure you have downloaded "Microsoft Teams (free)" specifically for personal use. If the meeting link is trying to force open the "Teams for Work or School" app, and you don't have a business license, you will see the deactivation error.

3, Adjust Default Link Handling:

When you click the link from your client, your browser usually asks if you want to open the "Teams" app.

Instead of allowing it to open the app, select "Join on the web instead" within your browser.

If the browser automatically opens the app, try right-clicking the link, selecting "Copy Link," and pasting it into a browser window where you are already signed in to teams.live.com.

4, Remove "Alias" Conflicts:

Log in to https://account.live.com/names/manage to ensure there are no unfamiliar organizations listed under your account.

Regarding Support, I understand you are disappointed with the lack of follow-up from the phone representative. Since I cannot trigger a call-back from this forum, if the steps above do not work, I recommend trying the Live Chat method again as mentioned. You can reference your existing Case ID to the chat agent to speed up the process. I truly appreciate your understanding.

Hi Winnie. I did everything you suggested. The account is only registered to my personal email. I do understand you correctly, when I get the teams link from the client, I will click on the link, ask to use the browser and go from there. Is that correct?

Teams is part of my personal 365 subscription. I want to make sure that I can change the gallery so that I can see more than 9 people on one screen. Will this permit me to do that?

Thanks for confirming you’ve completed the steps.

About your understanding, you understood correctly. When you receive a Teams link:

Click the meeting link

Choose “Continue on this browser” (or similar option)

Then sign in with your personal Microsoft account if prompted

This lets you access Teams via the web, which is fully supported for Teams Free.

About seeing more than 9 people, using Teams with your personal account (either via browser or app) does support viewing more than 9 participants, including:

Large gallery view (up to 49 participants)

Together mode (when available)

If you don’t see this option, it’s usually because:

There aren’t enough participants yet, or

The meeting type/role limits certain features

Your Microsoft 365 (personal) subscription does not control Teams Free features directly. Teams Free works as a separate service tied to your Microsoft account, so even with an active subscription, your Teams profile may need to be reinitialized (as mentioned earlier).

If you still find that your Teams account stays in guest-only mode or features are limited, then contacting support (as shared previously) would be the best next step to check your account status.

Thank you for the additional details. I’d like to continue assisting regarding @Kai-L. Since you’re using a personal Microsoft account and it was deactivated many years ago, this is typically not something that can be reversed from the Teams app. Please try the following next:

1, Confirm your Microsoft account status

Go to: https://account.microsoft.com/
Sign in with the same email
Check if the account itself is active and accessible

2, Try accessing Teams Free again via web

Go to: https://teams.live.com/
Sign in and see if you are prompted to set up a new Teams profile > If yes, this usually means the old Teams profile cannot be restored, but you can create a new one

3, Create a new Teams Free profile (if prompted)

Follow the on-screen setup to reinitialize Teams for your account
This does not affect your Microsoft 365 subscription

Regarding contacting Microsoft Support by phone, unfortunately this option is not available for personal accounts. Instead, you can reach Microsoft Support via live chat here:

Select the product or service you're having issue with.
Click Get Home Support
Type a brief description of your issue in the search box.
Click Get Help and select Contact Support below.

Thank you for your comments. I have a personal windows 365 active subscription. It says the account was deactivated many years ago. I had already completed the steps you mentioned re Teams and just downloaded again today. I can only access teams as a guest via browser.

Is there someone I can connect to at Microsoft to talk over the phone and get this resolved?
