Surface diagnostics toolkit: Touch Calibration Error After Display Replacement

Hello,

after replacing the display on my Surface device, I ran the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. Touch Display Setup completed successfully, but Touch Display Calibration failed with Error. Since then, touch does not work on the new display or the original one.

I am using Surface Diagnostic Toolkit 2.241, so I attached the log files from the logfiles folder.

How can I calibrate TDM?

Thank you.

I don't see any log files attached to your message.

    Visit:

    Reinstall Surface touch drivers manually

Download drivers and firmware for Surface

Download the Surface Update MSI package for your exact model

    Install it

    Reboot and retest

Touch Display (TDM) calibration after a display replacement must be performed and, if it fails repeatedly, the display or related hardware is treated as faulty.

To calibrate TDM correctly and gather what is needed for escalation:

    1. Boot the Surface to the Windows Desktop.
    2. Connect the USB drive that contains the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (SDT).
    3. In File Explorer, open the USB drive and run the SDT executable (.exe).
    4. On the SDT launch screen:
      • Select Repair from the drop-down menu.
      • Select Repair Setup and Validation.
      • Run Touch Display (Calibration) and follow all on-screen instructions.
      • Allow the device to restart when prompted.
    5. After restart, sign in to Windows and, if required by the procedure, launch SDT again and run the full diagnostics to confirm the device is functioning as expected.

    If Touch Display (Calibration) fails:

    1. Reboot the device and run Touch Display (Calibration) again from SDT as above.
    2. If calibration continues to fail after repeated attempts, the guidance for Surface devices is that the display may be faulty and requires replacement. This applies whether the display is newly installed or reused.

For escalation and deeper investigation of the TDM calibration failure:

    1. Run SDT again and let it reach the Results or main page so that logs are complete.
    2. Retrieve SDT details:
      • On the SDT launch screen, select the information (i) icon in the upper-left corner to open About.
      • Use Copy and paste the contents into the escalation template under Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (SDT) Details.
    3. Collect Touch/TDM logs:
      • Go to the folder where Microsoft.Surface.Diagnostics.App.Wpf.exe is located.
      • Open the LogFiles folder.
      • Copy all contents of LogFiles and create a ZIP archive (see Zip and unzip files).
    4. Collect general SDT logs:
      • In SDT About, note the Log Location path.
      • Navigate to that path and copy all folders under SurfaceDiagnosticToolkit_data.
      • Create a ZIP archive of these folders.
    5. Use these details and ZIP files when opening an escalation or support case so that TDM calibration errors can be analyzed.

If repeated SDT Touch Display (Calibration) attempts fail and both the original and replacement displays no longer respond to touch, the documented resolution path is:

    • Treat the display assembly as potentially faulty and replace it, then
    • Repeat the SDT Touch Display (Calibration) procedure and full diagnostics as part of the finalize steps for display or motherboard replacement.
