Hi, I need help with logging into my university Microsoft account. When I try to sign in, it asks me to enter the code from the Microsoft Authenticator app on my mobile device. The problem is that I am not signed in to my account on any mobile device, so I cannot see the code.I installed Authenticator before this is not my first time sign in.

Also, I don’t see any other verification or login options available — the system only asks for the Authenticator app to approve and enter the code, and I don’t have an alternative way to log in.

I need access to this account for all of my university project.

This is the Error Code: 500121Request Id: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] Correlation Id: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] Timestamp: 2026-06-06T14:03:53Z

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hi @joanne xuan,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding that you can't log in to your account due to Microsoft Authenticator is. I’d like to ask a quick questions to better understand your situation and assist you effectively:

Could you please clarify whether you are an end user or an admin?

If you are an end user I would recommend you contact your account's Admin to reset your MFA settings through the Microsoft Entra Admin Center. Ask your administrator to follow these steps:

Sign in to Microsoft Entra admin center with the admin account

    1. Go to Users
    2. Select the affected user account
    3. Open Authentication methods
    4. Revoke sessions
    5. Select Require re‑register MFA
    6. Save the changes

Revoke MFA sessions and require re-register in the Microsoft Entra admin center

For a university (work/school) Microsoft account that only allows Microsoft Authenticator and there is no access to the app on any signed-in device, self-recovery is not possible. The account’s multifactor authentication (MFA) settings must be reset by the organization.

    Use these steps:

    1. Try any other sign-in method, if present
      • On the sign-in screen, select Other ways to sign in (if available) and look for:
        • SMS or phone call
        • Email verification
        • Security key or other MFA methods
      • If another method works, sign in and add a backup method immediately (for example, SMS, email, or another Authenticator registration).
    2. If there is no other method and only Authenticator is allowed
      • This is the same “spiral” situation described where Authenticator is required but cannot be used.
      • For a work/school (university) account, only the organization’s IT/admin can reset MFA:
        • Contact the university IT help desk or Microsoft 365/Entra ID administrator.
        • Ask them to reset or clear the MFA/Authenticator registration for the account.
        • The admin can do this in Microsoft Entra Admin Center by requiring re-registration of multifactor authentication.
      • After the admin resets MFA, sign in again:
        1. Enter username and password.
        2. When prompted, re-register Microsoft Authenticator by scanning the QR code.
        3. Optionally add a secondary method (phone, email, security key) so there is a fallback next time.
    3. If the account is a business/education tenant and there is only one admin
      • If the only admin is locked out, the tenant’s admin must contact Microsoft support (via the official support phone numbers) so the Data Protection team can verify identity and reset MFA from their side.
    4. If the device was lost or Authenticator is no longer available
      • Use a different method if any are configured.
      • If none are available, again the organization’s help desk must clear the MFA settings so that Authenticator can be set up fresh.

Until the university IT/administrator resets the MFA configuration, the sign-in will remain blocked because the system is enforcing Microsoft Authenticator as the only verification method.
