Additional chat-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for business
Dear @Andrew March,
Thank you for reaching out. I understand how important it is to recover previous conversations.
Regarding your concern, once a 1:1 chat in Microsoft Teams has been deleted from your side, there is currently no supported method to restore the entire chat back to its original state in Teams.
Alternative options you may consider:
1.You can reach out to the other participant and request a copy of the conversation content (for example, via screenshots or copied text).
2.If your organization has compliance features enabled, an administrator may be able to export chat content using eDiscovery tools; however, this is for data retrieval purposes only and does not restore the chat back into Teams.
Step 1: Access the search in Microsoft Purview
- Go to Microsoft Purview (Compliance portal)
- Navigate to eDiscovery > Cases
- Open your case, then go to Searches
- Open the existing search or create a new one
Step 2: Add data sources
- Under Data sources (People), please ensure both users are added:
Step 3: Configure the search conditions
In the Condition builder, please set the filters as follows:
- Message kind: Select Microsoft Teams
- Sender: Enter both users’ email addresses
- Recipients: Enter both users’ email addresses
- Date: Set to Between
- From:
- To:
Step 4: Run the query
- Click Run query (top right)
- Please allow some time for the search to complete
Step 5: Export the results
- Once the query is completed, click Export
- Follow the prompts to download the results

Regarding notifications you are still seeing, those are system-level alerts and do not indicate that the deleted chat can be restored in the Teams interface.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Hope you having a nice day and really much warm regards to you as well.
Looking forward to your response!
