Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server stuck in 'starting' state

  • Server is stopped every Friday and started on Monday — has worked fine for weeks
  • Nothing changed on our side (config, automation, parameters)
  • This Monday: stuck in Starting for over an hour
    • CLI stop also fails with SeverBusyWithOtherOperation (same as start)
      • Weekly start automation is suspended to avoid further conflicts
  • Looks like a stuck backend/control-plane operation?, not a config issue

**
Request:** Please investigate and escalate to a support case if needed.

Happy to share CLI output, activity log timestamps, or anything else — let me know what you need!

Hi @pad-5184
Thankyou for reaching microsoft Q&A!

We checked the backend status and found that the underlying server instance is healthy. However, there appears to be a stuck platform/control-plane operation, which is preventing the PostgreSQL Flexible Server from moving out of the Starting state.

This also explains why subsequent operations (such as Stop) are failing with ServerBusyWithOtherOperation.
could you please check the server now and please let us know if the issue still persists.

    Hello pad-5184,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A and thank you for posting your questions here.

I understand that your Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server stuck in 'starting' state.

If the database is production-impacting and Internal team has not restored the original server within your RTO, restore to a new Flexible Server instead of waiting indefinitely. Use Azure Portal PITR or CLI restore. Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server automatically performs backups and supports point-in-time recovery within the configured retention period; default retention is 7 days and can be configured up to 35 days. - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/postgresql/backup-restore/concepts-backup-restore

I hope this is helpful! Do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions, steps or clarifications.
