Hello,

I use Microsoft Edge Read Aloud voices for text-to-speech generation and would like to clarify the licensing and usage terms.

Is it permitted to use audio generated by Microsoft Edge Read Aloud voices for commercial purposes, including:

monetized YouTube videos;

commercial media projects;

content that generates advertising revenue?

I would also like to know whether it is permitted to access the Microsoft Edge Read Aloud speech service through third-party clients (such as edge-tts), provided that no circumvention of restrictions, unauthorized access, or other abusive methods are involved.

I would appreciate any clarification or a reference to the applicable terms of use.

Hi Ali Usenov,

It’s very thoughtful of you to check for possible legal issues like copyright before creating monetized content. Unfortunately, at present, there isn’t any public documentation that explicitly addresses commercial usage rights for Edge Read Aloud voices or edge-tts.

That said, I did find a related thread: Is there a copyright issue with the Read Aloud feature in Microsoft Edge? - Microsoft Q&A. Since the post dates back to 2020 and has remained available without moderator removal, it’s worth taking into consideration.

  • From that discussion: the copyright concern lies with the material being read, not the reading feature itself. Based on that conclusion, you can continue with your plan.
  • Still, if you want certainty, I strongly recommend seeking direct clarification from Microsoft support or Microsoft Legal and Corporate Affairs before proceeding.

I wish I could give a more direct answer here, but since Microsoft Q&A is just a user-to-user forum, us contributors cannot offer legally binding interpretations of usage rights or licensing terms.
