When I return to a website (bbc.co.uk/news, amazon etc), I have to sign in again. I use edge windows 11. I never had to do this in the past.

    Hi Derek,

This usually happens when Edge is clearing cookies/sign-in data when the browser closes, or when an extension/security setting is blocking cookies.

    Please try these steps:

    1. Open Edge and go to: edge://settings/clearBrowsingDataOnClose
    2. Make sure Cookies and other site data is turned Off.
    3. Then go to: edge://settings/content/cookies
    4. Make sure cookies are allowed, and check that the websites are not listed under Clear on exit or Blocked.
    5. If you use any privacy/ad-blocking extensions, temporarily disable them and test again.
    6. Also make sure you are not opening websites in InPrivate mode, because sign-ins are not normally kept there.

After changing these settings, sign in to BBC/Amazon again, close Edge, reopen it, and test whether the login is remembered.

The usual way to remain signed in to a website is to let the website set a cookie on your computer. However, cookies have expiration dates as a security measure so you will eventually have to sign in again.

Change these settings in Microsoft Edge so sign-ins and cookies persist across sessions.

    1. Stop Edge from clearing cookies on exit
      1. In Edge, go to edge://settings/privacy/clearBrowsingData/clearOnClose.
      2. Turn off Cookies and other site data.
      3. Turn off any other items you don’t want cleared automatically when Edge closes.
    2. Allow sites to save cookies and remove per-site blocks
      1. Go to edge://settings/content/cookies.
      2. Turn on Allow sites to save and read cookie data.
      3. In the Block and Clear on close lists, remove any entries for sites where sign-in isn’t being remembered (for example, bbc.co.uk, amazon).
    3. Relax tracking prevention for affected sites Strict tracking prevention can block sign-in cookies.
      1. Go to edge://settings/privacy/trackingPrevention.
      2. Temporarily set Tracking prevention to Basic and test a site (sign in, close Edge, reopen, and check if you stay signed in).
      3. If that fixes it, set tracking back to Balanced and add the sign-in domains to exceptions:
        • Go to edge://settings/privacy/trackingPreventionExceptions.
        • Add the affected sites so their cookies aren’t blocked.
    4. Check for organization policies (work or school device) If using a managed device, policies may be forcing cookies to clear.
      1. Go to edge://policy.
      2. Look for:
        • ClearBrowsingDataOnExit
        • SaveCookiesOnExit
        • DefaultCookiesSetting
        • CookiesBlockedForUrls
        • CookiesSessionOnlyForUrls
      3. If any of these are configured in a way that prevents cookies from persisting for the sites in question, contact the administrator to adjust them.

After each change, restart Edge and test whether sites keep the sign-in session.
