Blank squares usually mean the font on the device does not support the symbol that was copied from the website. When a character is displayed using a font that does not contain that character, Windows shows a default “not defined” glyph, which is typically a square box.

On Windows 10/11, some fonts for certain languages/scripts are not installed by default and are instead in optional font packages. If the symbol uses one of those scripts and the required font is missing, the browser (Microsoft Edge) will show squares instead of the intended symbol.

To fix this on Windows 11 (similar steps as Windows 10):

    1. If the symbol is from a specific language you recognize and use often:
      1. Open Settings from Start.
      2. Go to Time & language.
      3. Select Region & language (or Language & region in newer builds).
      4. Add the language that matches the script of the symbol.
      5. Windows will install the associated optional font features for that language.
    2. If the language/script is unknown or you do not want to add a language:
      1. Open Settings from Start.
      2. Go to System.
      3. Select Apps & features.
      4. Click Manage optional features.
      5. Choose Add a feature.
      6. From the list, install the likely Supplemental Fonts package (for example, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Devanagari, etc., depending on what the symbol is supposed to be).

After installing the relevant optional font feature, restart Edge and test the website again. If the site or app still shows squares, the site may be using a font or character that is not supported, in which case contacting the site/app developer is recommended.
