Visual Studio Professional 2022 normally does not require a product key if it is associated with an active Visual Studio subscription; activation is done by signing in with the account that owns the subscription.
Use these steps to retrieve license details and, if needed, a key:
- Confirm the subscription account
Identify which work/school or Microsoft account the licenses were purchased/assigned to. Visual Studio must be signed in with that same account for activation. If sign‑in fails or the subscription is not recognized, follow the guidance in Sign in or switch Visual Studio user accounts as referenced under “If sign-in doesn't work”.
- Check subscription and downloads
Sign in to the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal with the correct account and verify the subscription level and available benefits:
- View subscriptions:
https://my.visualstudio.com/subscriptions
- Download Visual Studio Professional 2022 from the Tools section as described in the “How do I download, find a key, and activate the Visual Studio IDE?” article.
After installation, sign in to the IDE with the same account; no product key is required for normal online use.
- If offline activation or a key is required
If Visual Studio must be used offline or sign‑in is not possible, a product key can be claimed (if the subscription level includes one):
- Sign in to the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal.
- Go to the Product Keys page.
- Search for “Visual Studio Professional 2022” and claim the key as described in “Finding and claiming product keys in Visual Studio subscriptions”.
- In Visual Studio, open File > Account Settings, choose Unlock with a Product Key, and enter the key.
- If product keys/downloads are disabled by an admin
If the licenses were provided through an organization and product keys/downloads are not visible, the subscription admin may have disabled access. In that case, contact the subscription admin as indicated in the product keys overview.
- If the subscription is expired or cannot be accessed
If the subscription has expired or the original account cannot be recovered, new access rights or a new subscription are required. The “Update an expired license” guidance states that when a subscription is expired, Visual Studio access must be restored by renewing the subscription, adding another account with a valid subscription, or entering a valid product key.
If none of the above paths work (for example, the purchase was not through Visual Studio subscriptions or the account cannot be identified), contact Visual Studio Subscriptions support for subscription/account assistance.
