My laptop PC keeps dropping the wifi connection unless I connect manually without "Connect automatically when in range" selected. If I select "Connect automatically when in range" it connects and after a brief period the connection is dropped.

    Hi David Lambert,

Since the Wi‑Fi connection remains stable when you connect manually but drops after enabling“Connect automatically when in range”, the issue may be related to the saved Wi‑Fi profile or power management settings rather than the internet connection itself.

In addition to updating or reinstalling the Wi‑Fi driver, you can try the following targeted checks:

    1, Disable Wi‑Fi power saving

    • Open Device Manager > Network adapters.
    • Right-click your Wi‑Fi adapter > Properties > Power Management.
    • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

    2, Recreate the Wi‑Fi profile

    • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks.
    • Select your network, choose Forget, then reconnect and enter the password again.

    3, Perform a Network Reset

    • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
    • Restart the PC after the reset completes.

If the issue continues, please share your laptop model and Wi‑Fi adapter model from Device Manager, and the community can help identify any device-specific driver or firmware recommendations.

I hope one of these steps helps stabilize the connection. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

    Hi! Let me help you.

Please hover your mouse over the Network or Wireless icon at the lower right-hand corner, then right-click it and click Troubleshoot Network. Let the troubleshooter finish its task, then this should either resolve the problem or display an error message.

If that doesn't work, we need to remove the WIFI driver from the Device Manager and restart the pc to reinstall it.

Here are the steps to completely remove a Device from your computer.

    Step 1. Use shortcut keys Windows key+ + X

    Step 2. Select Device Manager.

Step 3. Expand the entry for Network Adapters, Right-click the problematic device, which is either an Intel Wireless or Realtek WIFI adapter, and select Uninstall device.

Step 4. You need to check the option Delete the driver software for this device and then click the Uninstall button.

    Step 5. Reboot the computer.

After the reboot, please see if the problem is fixed.

If that still does not work, please visit the support website of your laptop or desktop, download and install the latest Wireless driver, and then restart the PC.
