There is not a "family account" as such.

With a family subscription, the primary account sends invitations to other users of the account. They then use that invitation to sign into Office with their own, individual, accounts.https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/accounts-billing/subscriptions/share-your-microsoft-365-subscription

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Can you clarify what you mean by "locked out"?

Is your son unable to sign in to his Microsoft account because he forgot the password, can't complete verification, or is he seeing a specific error message? If possible, please share the exact error or a screenshot.
