Windows Update keeps downloading and installing security update KB5094125 but fails with HRESULT 0x80073712. The error occurs on Azure VM Windows Server 2025 Datacenter.

2026-06 Security Update (KB5094125) (26100.32995) Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)

The Windows Update cache has already been cleaned up. The VM rebooted multiple times. After many retries and fail, it eventually completes but the error is back after a few seconds or a reboot.

    Hi @Nikhil Duserla

Thanks for getting back so quickly. I've had already followed all these steps with no success. Below my answers to your follow-up questions.

    1. Is the VM patching happening via Windows Update in the OS, or via Azure Automatic VM guest patching / Update Manager? -> Originally in the OS but I tried both and both fails.
    2. Does the VM have direct outbound internet access, or is outbound traffic forced through Azure Firewall / proxy / restricted by NSGs/UDRs? -> The VM has direct outbound internet access
    3. What do you see in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log around the timestamp when KB5094125 fails (any “missing files” / “servicing stack” / component store errors)?
         Component metadata corrupt for Microsoft-Windows-NCrypt.Resources, version 10.0.26100.1591, arch amd64, culture [l:5]'de-DE', nonSxS, pkt {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}: STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT

    4. Have you checked available disk space (system drive and Windows temp areas)? -> Almost 76GB free storage
    5. Are other updates failing too, or only KB5094125? -> All updates worked for month and another Defender update went through with no issue
