MS Teams says I have 15 favourites pinned but I only have nine. This seems to be a well documented bug so why can't Microsoft fix it?

Hi Chris Lannigan,

I am following up on your issue.

Since you confirmed that this is a personal account and that the message says “15 Favourite limit reached. Remove a chat to add more,” it sounds like Teams may still be counting favourites that are not currently shown in the Mac desktop app.

Please note that this is a user-to-user forum, so contributors here cannot access your Teams Free account data or manually reset the favourites list from the service side. However, you can try managing the list from Teams on the web first:

  1. Open Teams on the web with the same personal account, preferably from https://teams.live.com/.
  2. Check whether more favourites appear there than in the Mac desktop app.
  3. If additional favourites appear on the web, remove any old or unwanted favourites until the list is clearly below the limit.
  4. Quit the Teams Mac app completely, reopen it, and then try adding the favourites again.
  5. Also make sure Teams is up to date on the Mac by opening Teams and using Help > Check for Updates.

If Teams on the web also shows fewer than 15 favourites, but the Mac app still says the 15-favourite limit has been reached, the issue would need to be reported through Teams Free feedback or support. In the Teams desktop app, select Settings and more (...) > Feedback > Report a problem. In the report, include the exact message, mention that you are using a personal account on Teams for Mac, and attach a screenshot if possible. You may also contact Teams Free support through this link: Contact Teams Free support. Reference: Send feedback or suggest a feature in Microsoft Teams Free | Microsoft Support

I hope this helps narrow down whether the extra favourites are hidden only in the Mac app or still being counted from your account.

    Hello @Chris Lannigan,

Thank you for sharing your question.

Based on my description, I tested this and was able to pin more than 9 chats (even more than 15 chats) to Favorites in my environment. Because of this, the behavior you’re seeing does not appear to match the expected experience, and may be specific to your setup rather than a general bug.

To help us provide the most accurate and effective solution for your issue, could you share a bit more detail about your environment:

    • As you submitted this question under Business tag, can you confirm if you're using Teams with a work or school account, or a personal Microsoft account (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo,...)?
    • Are you signed into multiple accounts in Teams?
    • Does this issue occur only in the Teams desktop app on macOS, or do you see the same behavior in Teams on the web or mobile app?
    • Are other users in your organization experiencing the same issue, or is it only affecting your account?
    • Do you receive any error message when trying to add more than nine chats to Favorites? If so, please share the exact message.
    • You mentioned that Teams reports 15 favorites but only displays nine. Could you let me know where the number 15 comes from? For example, is it shown within Teams itself, referenced in Microsoft documentation, or based on information from another source?

These details will help us better understand the situation and identify the most appropriate next steps.

I apologize if I can't jump straight to a solution at this stage. I want to avoid providing inaccurate or unhelpful guidance and make sure any recommendations are based on your specific scenario.

Looking forward to your response so we can continue investigating this together.
