Microsoft Authenticator backups only appear when all backup conditions are met. Based on the description, the app now shows empty because the backup wasn’t restored correctly, or there was no usable backup under the signed-in recovery account.

Key points and what can be done:

    1. Backups are tied to a specific recovery account and device type
      • Authenticator backs up to a personal Microsoft account acting as the recovery account.
      • iOS backups restore only to iOS; Android backups restore only to Android. Accounts backed up on one platform can’t be restored on the other.
    2. What is actually backed up
      • Microsoft personal accounts:
        • If they use only one-time password (OTP) codes, those codes are available once restored.
        • If they also use passwordless sign-in, only the account name is backed up; sign-in is required again after restore.
      • Work or school accounts: only the account name is backed up; sign-in is required again.
      • 3rd-party OTP accounts (Amazon, Facebook, Gmail, etc.): OTP codes are available once restored.
    3. How to restore correctly (Android)
Since the phone was reset and Authenticator was set up fresh instead of using backup:
      1. Open Microsoft Authenticator.
      2. Go to Settings.
      3. If Cloud Backup is off, turn it on and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account that was used previously for backup.
      4. If a backup exists under that account, Authenticator will offer to restore it.
    4. How to restore correctly (iOS)
      • Ensure the device is signed into the same iCloud account used previously.
      • In Authenticator, go to Settings and ensure iCloud backup is enabled.
      • If the backup still doesn’t appear, follow the iOS troubleshooting steps: enable iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, iCloud Backup, make sure Authenticator is toggled on in “Saved to iCloud”, and use Authenticator version 6.8.33 or later.
    5. If “Restore from backup” or “Begin recovery” is not visible
      • On Android or iOS, if those options don’t appear, remove or sign out of all accounts in Authenticator, then reopen the app. The restore options should appear before signing in.
      • If still not visible, there may be no backup associated with the signed-in recovery account.
    6. If the backup cannot be restored
      • If access to the backup account is lost, or no backup exists, support agents cannot restore Authenticator data.
      • In that case, each account must be added again manually using its provider’s sign-in or recovery process.

There is no separate “backup history log” view in Authenticator; what can be restored is limited to the backed-up account data described above, and only when signed into the correct recovery account on the same platform.
