Request for a Standard Banner Size for Announcements

Hello,

I would like to request support regarding the consistent display of announcement banners.

At the moment, announcement banners do not appear to be displayed uniformly. I reviewed several channels and initially followed the specified dimensions of 844 × 244 pixels at 72 dpi. With this format, the image fits into the displayed announcement frame without visible scaling. However, it does not extend across the full available page width.

In contrast, when colleagues upload significantly larger images, for example images exceeding 4,000 × 6,000 pixels, the image seems to be scaled differently and is displayed across a much larger area or the full page width. As a result, different banner formats are currently being used across the company, leading to an inconsistent visual appearance.

To ensure a consistent and professional design, we would appreciate a clear and binding recommendation for announcement banners. In particular, we would need guidance on:

  • the recommended image width and height in pixels,
  • the ideal aspect ratio,
  • the maximum supported file size or image resolution,
  • how automatic scaling or cropping is handled,
  • and, if relevant, the recommended dpi setting.

The goal is to enable teams across the company to create announcement banners in a consistent format that is displayed as uniformly as possible across all channels.

Please find several examples attached that illustrate the different display behaviors.

Thank you very much for your support.

    Hi @Anna Környey-Pfaff,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed description of what you're seeing.

Just to make sure I understand correctly, when you mention that the banner does not extend across the full page width, are you referring to the area shown in the screenshot below:

I also noticed that you mentioned "Please find several examples attached that illustrate the different display behaviors." Unfortunately, I’m not seeing any attachments associated with the post on my end. Would you mind uploading them again?

In the meantime, I'd like to share a few observations that may be helpful. Please note that this is a community-driven user-to-user forum, so I'm not part of Microsoft's internal product team and I don't have access to any officially confirmed specifications regarding announcement banner rendering.

However, based on my experience and what I've seen in similar cases, a banner size of around 1024 × 512 pixels with a 2:1 aspect ratio tends to deliver fairly consistent results and has worked well in most scenarios.

For the image format, PNG generally works well for graphics, illustrations, or banners that contain text, while JPG is usually a better choice for photo-based images.

I would also recommend avoiding extremely large images, such as those in the 4000+ pixel range. Teams appears to render announcement banners responsively, so images may be scaled or cropped differently depending on the Teams client, window size, device type, screen resolution, and channel layout. Because of this, it's difficult to guarantee a completely pixel-perfect appearance across all viewing scenarios. A good practice is to keep important text, logos, and key visual elements closer to the center of the image to reduce the impact of unexpected cropping.

Regarding DPI, it typically isn't a significant factor for Teams or web-based display. Teams primarily relies on the image's pixel dimensions and aspect ratio rather than print resolution settings. Using 72 DPI is perfectly fine, but the image dimensions and aspect ratio will have a much greater impact on how the banner appears.

I hope this information is helpful as a reference point while we discuss further. If you have any updates, please leave a comment under this post. That's the best way for me to receive notifications and follow up with you promptly.

Looking forward to your response and thank you so much for taking time.
