A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For a locked personal Microsoft account (for example, Outlook.com / Microsoft Live) where Microsoft Authenticator and MFA are failing and no recovery key is available, the only supported paths are:
- Try online unlock with a security code
If the account shows as locked or blocked when signing in:- Use the online flow to request and enter a security code to unlock the account. You can use any phone number that can receive text messages; it does not have to be already associated with the account (for example, a colleague’s or family member’s phone).
- Make sure you enter the numbers in the body of the SMS message, not the header.
- If you see a "usage limit exceeded" error, the number may have been used too many times or flagged as suspicious; try a different number.
- If the account is locked and you don’t see “Next” when signing in
When signing in, if the page says the account is locked and there is no Next button:- Use the link in the window that begins with aka.ms/ (for example, an account reinstatement or sign‑in helper link).
- Fill out the reinstatement form completely and submit it once. A Microsoft Online Safety support agent will review it and contact by email. Submitting multiple requests can slow down the response.
- If security info (MFA methods) are the problem
If the password is known but all MFA/security info (phone, email, Authenticator) are inaccessible:- Start sign‑in to the Microsoft account.
- At the “Verify your identity” prompt, choose “I don't have any of these”.
- Follow the steps to replace the security info.
- After replacement, the account is restricted for 30 days before normal sign‑in is allowed. During those 30 days, if old security info is recovered, it can still be used to sign in, which cancels the pending change.
- If both password and all security info are lost
When neither the password nor any verification method is available:- Read the guidance on the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Submit a request via the account recovery form with as much accurate information as possible.
- Microsoft support cannot bypass this process or directly change account details without a successful form submission.
- If locked out of Microsoft Authenticator backup
If Authenticator account credentials cannot be restored because the backup account itself is inaccessible, support agents cannot directly recover Authenticator data.- Use the Microsoft account sign‑in helper to regain access to the backup Microsoft account first.
- Once access is restored, re‑add accounts to Authenticator manually.
There is no separate support team that can override MFA or Authenticator for a personal Microsoft account outside these documented recovery and reinstatement flows. The key actions are: use the sign‑in helper / aka.ms link shown on the lock screen, replace security info if possible, or submit the account recovery form with full details.
