Officially the free upgrade time period to go from Windows 7 to Windows 10 ended in 2016, there was a loophole after that which allowed people to continue to upgrade for free, however, in September 2023, Microsoft finally closed that loophole and since then it is no longer possible to upgrade form Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 or 11 for free.
If you are going to perform the upgrade, first check the support page for your laptop on the manufacturers website to check if they provide Windows 10 drivers.
If your laptop was pre-installed with Windows 7, then your hardware will not be Windows 11 compatible, the minimum requirements for Windows 11 is an 8th gen Intel processor.
