MSDS Chain — Chemical Safety Intelligence
MSDS Chain provides AI-powered chemical safety intelligence for laboratory researchers, EHS officers, and compliance teams. It delivers real-time safety data from a database of 4.3M+ chemicals, 72K+ Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and 23 regulatory lists across 10 regions.
Pre-requisites
- A MSDS Chain account (free plan: 100 calls/month). No software installation required.
- This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server over Streamable HTTP — tools are discovered and invoked over the MCP protocol, not individual REST endpoints.
How to connect
- Add the connector and create a connection — you are redirected to sign in (OAuth 2.1). Enter your email, receive a one-time code, and approve.
- Your account is provisioned automatically on first sign-in; calls are metered to you.
- Headless/CI clients may instead present a personal API key (
sk-msds-..., created in the API Keys tab) via theAuthorization: BearerorX-API-Keyheader.

Authentication
This connector uses OAuth 2.1 (Authorization Code + PKCE with Dynamic Client
Registration). On connect you are redirected to sign in; the gateway maps your token to
your account and meters usage per user. Headless clients may alternatively present a
personal API key via the X-API-Key or Authorization: Bearer header.
Known Issues and Limitations
- Rate limits: Free tier is limited to 100 API calls per month. Paid plans available for higher volume.
- Language support: Responses available in English, Chinese, Japanese, German, and Indonesian. Default is English.
- Data coverage: While the database covers 4.3M+ chemicals, detailed SDS data is available for ~72K chemicals. For chemicals without SDS data, the system uses AI inference from known properties.
- Regional compliance: 23 regulatory lists across 10 regions are indexed. Some newer or country-specific regulations may have partial coverage.
- PDF parsing: Upload supports PDF format only. Scanned/image-only PDFs may have reduced extraction accuracy.
