To perform service and support actions in Surface Support Portal, the correct roles need to be assigned in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. To assign roles:

  • In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, select Users, then Active users.
  • Select the user.
  • Open Manage roles.
  • Assign the administrative role required for Surface support actions.
  • Save changes.

To perform service and support actions in Surface Support Portal, assign the administrative role required to:

  • Create service orders.
  • Open support cases
  • Track request status.

Important

After assigning roles, it's crucial to allow time for role propagation before verifying administrator access for new users. For the Surface Support Portal, it's recommended to assign the Microsoft Hardware Warranty Administrator role—as it ensures that all aspects of service requests, warranty claims, and operational efficiencies are handled effectively.

Imagine you're an IT administrator, and a user can open Surface Support Portal but is unable to create a service order. To fix this issue, assigning that user with the required Surface Support role allows them to proceed with their service request.
