On my tablet I can only select a single word or whole paragraph with the mouse in MS Word to edit in a document. When I double click I only get a single word selected and there are no pull tabs to select more.

Hello Jim Phillipsz!

From what you shared, when you’re using a mouse in Word on your tablet, you’re only able to select a single word (or a full paragraph), and the usual click‑and‑drag selection isn’t working as expected, with no selection handles appearing to adjust the highlighted text.

Several users have also reported similar behavior previously, where mouse drag selection doesn’t work as expected in Word on Android tablet, even though it functions normally in other apps:

Word / DEX mode : Text selection issue

Since the tablet app is mainly designed for touch input, mouse input may not always behave the same way as it does on a desktop, which can lead to limitations with actions like click‑and‑drag selection.

So far, there hasn’t been an official fix for this, but here are a few workarounds you can consider:

  • Try selecting text using the touchscreen instead of the mouse
  • If you’re using a keyboard, try Shift + arrow keys for selection. You can also try holding Shift + double‑clicking with the mouse to extend the selection. Some users report this allows text to be highlighted, although the selection may only appear after you release the mouse button.

If the issue continues after trying these steps, you may want to share feedback through the app (tap your profile > Help & Feedback > Send Feedback) so the team can review and consider improvements in a future update. While this behavior could be by design, user feedback can help influence future improvements.

On Word for Android tablets, text selection is done with taps and drag handles rather than mouse-style click‑and‑drag.

To select more than a single word:

    1. Double‑tap the first word to select it.
    2. After the word is selected, small selection handles appear at the start and end of the word.
    3. Tap and drag one of these handles to extend the selection across additional words, sentences, or paragraphs.
    4. To select an entire paragraph in one step, triple‑tap anywhere in that paragraph.

If the handles are not visible, ensure the tap sequence is correct (double‑tap for a word, triple‑tap for a paragraph) and that the tap is on text, not in empty space.

Once the text is selected, use the edit menu (three dots) to cut, copy, paste, or apply formatting.
