I attempted to reproduce the issue in my test environment, but I was able to compose emails normally without the text automatically appearing in italics. I was also able to switch between italic and regular formatting without any issue. Additionally, I also did not come across any recent user reports describing the same issue, which suggests this may be specific to your current configuration.
To help narrow this down, could you please check the following:
- First, please try restarting your Mac and see whether that makes any difference.
- Please also check whether Outlook is updated to the latest version.
- Then, test the same behavior in Outlook on the web to check whether the issue happens there as well.
- If possible, please also try in an incognito/InPrivate window and let me know whether a new email still opens in italics by default.
- If you’re comfortable doing so, please share a screenshot showing a new email with the text in italics and the italic button grayed out. Kindly make sure to mask or obscure any sensitive information before posting.
- Lastly, if you select all the text in the message and press Control + I, does the formatting return to normal, or does nothing change?
