Teams Town Hall: Copied join link opened incorrect experience, but "Share event" link worked correctly

We recently experienced an issue with a Teams Town Hall event and would like to know if anyone else has seen similar behavior.

The Town Hall was created normally in Teams. Before the event, the organizer copied the join link from the event page and distributed it to attendees.

During the event, attendees reported that the link did not open the Town Hall correctly. Some users saw no event at all, and the organizer noticed that opening the shared link resulted in a regular Teams meeting experience rather than the expected Town Hall experience.

The organizer was only able to access the actual Town Hall by joining from the Teams calendar. Once inside the event, she used People > Share event to generate another link and shared that with attendees. This second link worked correctly and allowed attendees to join the Town Hall.

What is confusing is that the original copied link appeared to be different from the working Share event link, even though both were associated with the same Town Hall.

Has anyone encountered a situation where:

  • The link copied from the Town Hall event page does not work correctly?
  • The organizer is taken to a standard Teams meeting experience instead of the Town Hall producer/green room experience?
  • The Share event link works, but the originally copied link does not?

Is this a known issue, and are there any recommendations for which Town Hall join link should be distributed to attendees to avoid this problem?

    Hi Janos SCHÖLL

I tried to replicate the same behavior on my end using a Town Hall event configured with Public access. In my testing, attendees were able to join successfully using both the Share event link and the Copy meeting link option.

While the two links may appear in different formats, they both pointed to the same Town Hall event during my test.

Additionally, the organization in my test environment also had the Manage screen section available

At this time, I have not found any official Microsoft documentation that confirms the behavior you experienced as a known issue.

That said, since the issue could be related to specific conditions within your environment, I would recommend contacting the Microsoft Support team for further investigation and official confirmation. As community forum moderators, I do not have access to Microsoft's internal diagnostic tools or back-end systems, so our ability to investigate tenant-specific scenarios is limited.

You may ask your IT administrator to create a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. For more information, please refer to: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

I hope this helps provide some additional insight into the situation.
