I mistakenly purchased a Microsoft Office gift card from a local Best Buy, and when attempting to return it, I was told I could only refund it through Microsoft support, but there is little info on it. It has not been activated. How do I deactivate the code given to me and get my money back?

The sales representative in Best Buy is incorrect, if you purchased the gift card from Best Buy, then it is their responsibility to provide you with a refund, depending on their returns policy, Microsoft cannot provide you with a refund because you did not purchase the gift card directly from them.
